An infinite expanse of empty rooms one supposedly enters by "clipping out of reality," characterized by yellowing wallpaper, fluorescent lighting, and damp carpet stretching endlessly.
The Backrooms is an internet urban legend born from a single image posted on 4chan's /x/ (paranormal) board in May 2019. The photo showed an empty office space with yellowing wallpaper, captioned: "If you're not careful and noclip out of reality, you'll end up in the Backrooms." The concept merged with liminal space aesthetics and expanded rapidly.
The community built a hierarchical structure called "Levels." Starting from Level 0 (the yellow rooms), hundreds of levels have been created. Each has unique environments, hazards, and "entities" (inhabiting creatures), forming a massive collaboratively authored universe.
In 2022, Kane Parsons released a YouTube short film titled "The Backrooms (Found Footage)," which amassed over 300 million views. A24 signed a deal with Parsons for a feature film adaptation, with a major studio horror production currently underway.
